Resonance 4.0 is Keepers of the Flames' 4th annual three day camping event that upholds the ideals of the Burning Man Festival and other regional burns throughout the world. The goal of Resonance is to unite the scattered Burners and potential Burners of Kansas and the Midwest in this celebration of Art, Fire, and Life - further spreading the unique Burner experience throughout the region. Like Burning Man, we will build a temporary city-community of tents, domes, light, dance, fire and music in the wilderness (in this case the plains, not the desert). We will celebrate our diversity continuously from Friday through Sunday morning. Then we will dismantle our city and Leave No Trace.
This years Resonance theme is 'Doorways'! So many possibilities lie on the other side of doors. It can be a beautiful sunrise or a new phase of your life. It could be the entrance to your favorite club, a gathering of close friends, or your loved ones waiting for you when you get off the plane. Maybe it's a door you closed when you said goodbye and moved on. It might even lead to a whole new reality. There's a very high probability that it's the cat wanting in to sleep all day after doing whatever it is they do all night. It's about transitions, possibilities, impossibilities. What's in that cabinet? Who's knocking on the door? What planet is on the other side of that airlock?
Resonance 4.0 will be held October 7th - 9th, 2011 on secluded private property located in Valley Center, KS, at the corner of W 73rd St N and N Tyler Rd, a short 20 minute drive north of west Wichita. We will occupy a beautiful, established campground property complete with trails, meadows, riverbanks, community grill and congregation areas, firepits, multiple bathrooms with private shower stalls and picnic & recreation areas.

A Burn is traditionally an outdoor event where people come together to recreate the Burning Man experience closer to home. At the height of many Burns a giant wooden effigy is burned while the participants celebrate with drums, music, and dance. Since Resonance occurs in the fall, it is a de-compression party of sorts. Resonance is time for relaxation and reminiscence as we decompress from Burning Man and the outdoor festival season.
Come out, camp, express yourself, and co-create a wonderful experience.
Other definitions of a Burn would also include:
- An event created solely by the actions and participation of those who attend. It's your party - evolved and propelled by the creative energies of everyone there.
- A social experiment in temporary community. Many "first timers" are caught unprepared for the pervasive feelings of openness and togetherness that often accompany a Burn.
- One of the few places you'll ever find where people give freely to one another without thought of profit or return. This is called a Gift Economy. Vending and commerce are not allowed.
- A time where people come together to express radical creativity in all of its forms.
- A place of freedom, strangeness and amazement, radical art, music, dance, performance, and spontaneity. -top^
We Burners value participation, interactivity, self-expression and gifting, among other things. These values permeate our gatherings and can serve as a guide for newcomers wondering how they can contribute to the event.
Have you ever been to a party and thought something was missing, but someone else was throwing the party so you enjoyed it the best you could? Well, here is your chance to bring your crazy flair to Resonance because, after all, it's your event.
Below are some examples of our ideals in action. This is a list of ideas for participating and things that you can expect to experience at Resonance:
- Performance: At many Burn events you will see firedancing and open drum circles. However, performance can also encompass things such as fashion shows, juggling, DJing, playing in bands, presenting skits, doing stand-up comedy, or organizing spontaneous parades, to name just a few ideas.
- Be A Good Citizen: We are actually creating a temporary town, of which you will be a citizen. Participate by treating the land and the owners with respect. Don't create litter, pick up your trash, and Leave No Trace at the end of the event. Also, respect other people and their forms of self-expression.
- Volunteer: Resonance runs on the efforts of responsible volunteers. Want to get involved? Check out the volunteer positions. There is lots of help needed.
- Create: Art is the centerpiece of our gatherings, our main vehicle of interaction! You can manifest your creativity in many ways. Many times small touches make the deepest impact. Make and wear costumes and/or bodypaint. Create interactive games. Give unique gifts to people you meet and folks who are providing you with a good time. Another method of gifting is to contribute to a Theme Camp. Are they serving drinks? Contribute alcohol or cups. Is it a lounge? See if they want to add that bean bag you brought. The possibilities are limited only by your imagination. -top^
Resonance is a first come, first camp event. This means you can camp wherever you want provided the space isn't restricted or already occupied. If your campsite occupies a huge amount of space, you should consider arriving at Resonance early Friday morning. Driving, walking, camping and lounging will be restricted in some areas. These areas will be clearly roped off. Please respect all boundaries.
In addition to tents big and small, you'll also see many offbeat structures at Resonance. If you've been to Burning Man you will recognize them - geodesic domes, parachute structures, yurts, and constructions that defy all description. Some of them are art, some of them are called home.
Some basic safety guidelines for all Resonance structures:
- Cover all exposed tent stakes and rebar with something protective, like rubber balls or plastic bottles. Exposed stakes are a primary cause of accidents.
- Mark your strings, wires, and guylines so people don't trip. Brightly colored tape and glow tape are ideal for this.
- Collect or mark things so that people won't trip over them at night.
- Be sure your tiki torches are planted in solid ground.
- Add lights to your structure so people can see it. The Kansas Plains are very dark at night.
- Keep paths and walkways clear. -top^
Sound and music will be a big part of Resonance. You'll get the chance to hear all kinds of different music and ambient sounds, all day and all night. There will be drummers and drumming groups at Resonance. Bring your own drum and join in - you don't have to be a pro.
Got a boombox? No problem. Play that funky music. If you are really close to other campsites you should check to see that your volume is reasonable next door. While the property may be very secluded, be mindful that we are not immune to noise complaints. If ResoRangers request you turn down your music, please do so immediately.
If you do not coordinate your sound camp setup with the event planners and show up at the front gate with an amplified system in tow, you will not be allowed to use it. You can enter and not use it, or leave without refund. Resonance does not "book" musical acts - no one is paid, no one gets a comp ticket. Everyone attending Resonance is a participant, donating their time, equipment and talent for the enjoyment of all.
There is no flyering or promoting at Resonance. You're welcome to talk to people about your events as you meet them but get their e-mail and send them information later. You may give out free CDs of your music with your e-mail address as a gifts though. The emphasis is on making friends, not building a consumer base. -top^
You must bring enough food, water, ice and first aid to survive in a natural Kansas environment for 3 days. There is absolutely no vending at Resonance.
Some people like to rough-it and eat granola bars for three days. Others like to dine like Kings and Queens. It's your choice. Bringing a little extra food to share makes a fun gift and is a good way to meet your neighbors.
BBQs and fire pits are allowed at Resonance (but remember to bring wood or fuel).
In addition to your regular Fall camping clothes, you must take the Kansas weather into consideration. Bring appropriate clothing and products to protect yourself.
Whether you bring only the bare essentials or the entire house, be sure to carefully consider each of these equipment categories:
- Tent or structure(s)
- Food, Water and Ice
- Clothing and costumes
- Sleeping arrangements (sleeping bags, covers, pillows...)
- Weather related items (umbrellas, ponchos, coat, sunblock, socks, good shoes, boots...)
- First Aid Kit & Bug Spray (a necessity)
- Fun stuff to play with and share with others
- Gifts, freebies, or give-aways
- Garbage bags or boxes
- An open mind
Alcohol is permitted at Resonance for those 21 and older. When you arrive at Resonance and sign-in, you will be required to show a legal ID proof of age. Those over 21 will get a colored wristband. Anyone drinking alcohol without that wristband will be required to either show ID and get a new wristband, or leave without refund. This is for everyone's protection and complies with local, state and federal law.
Please note NO GLASS BOTTLES ALLOWED!This is a list of items not allowed at Resonance. Anyone possessing these items will be required to leave the event.
- Fireworks
- Guns and related firearms
- Weapons of any kind -top^
The main event at Resonance (10:00 pm, Saturday) is the burning of a giant effigy. It will be by far the largest fire at Resonance and is very inspiring.
Fire Art Installations must be registered with Resonance Event Coordinators for placement. We will coordinate with the artists to ensure maximum safety while their Fire Art installations are lit.
If you've ever seen a performer spinning fire balls in the dark, moving to a drummer's beat, you know your life won't be complete until you see it again. There will be plenty of individual and group fire performers at Resonance.
Please operate your toys sober and safely. Respect the ResoRangers if they approach you with any safety requests. -top^
If you intend to party 'till dawn, you'll need the ability to navigate at night. That means flashlights and lanterns - either gas or battery powered. Remember to bring plenty of gas cannisters and extra batteries. Fishing around in the dark for your keys is a real bummer.
If you bring or create art that will be displayed in a public area, please illuminate it in some fashion so people can appreciate it at night (and not stumble into it).
A city at night needs lights! Lights everywhere! Try attaching battery powered Christmas lights to your tent or structure. Bring that disco light you've kept in the closet for years. Hang glowsticks. Light tiki torches. Use glow-in-the-dark paint. Did you know there are battery powered black lights at party stores? Use your artistic imagination to help make Resonance a city of light in the wilderness. -top^
No On-Site Electricity. If you want power you'll have to generate it yourself. Power generators are welcome at Resonance, but please keep these things in mind:
- Newer generators are fairly quiet, but some generators can be obnoxiously loud. Be aware of your sound output.
- Don't dig a pit for your generator - it scars the land.
- Your neighbors will not be pleased if you run an extremely loud generator for a couple of lights and a blender.
- If necessary, consider baffling your generator's sound with some kind of encircling wall, or maybe in the bottom of a box. This forces most of the sound upward.
- Ask your camping neighbors if your generator is too loud. If so, try moving it further away and run longer power cords to your camp. Chilling with the neighbors is often one of the most fun experiences at Burn events. You don't want to ruin this.
- Bring sufficient fuel. -top^
No pets will be allowed at Resonance with the exception of those needed by people with diabilities. Non-disabled people arriving with pets must be turned away at the Front Gate without refund.
Most animals are very bothered by the 24 hour chaos at these kinds of events and no one likes to step in, well, you know. The owners of the property have their own pets that may not appreciate your pet being there.
Your animal friend might be the coolest pet ever, a lover all humankind, an activist for inter-species peace, a performer of amazing tricks, and a crapper of jewels and bubbles. But still, please leave your super-pet at home. Don't put the Front Gate crew through the emotionally wrenching experience of turning you away. -top^
